One hundred years ago, when the world first commemorated International Women’s Day, gender equality and women’s empowerment were largely radical ideas. On this centenary, we celebrate the significant progress that has been achieved through determined advocacy, practical action and enlightened policy making. Yet, in too many countries and societies, women remain second-class citizens.
虽然教育领域的性别差距在缩小，但各国内部和各国之间仍存在巨大的差异，许多女孩仍然没有接受学校教育的机会，或者中途辍学，或在毕业时没有获得多少技能，获得的机会则更少。妇女和女孩还在继续忍受歧视和暴力，而且往往是来自亲密伴侣或亲戚的歧视和暴力，这些都是不可接受的。
Although the gender gap in education is closing, there are wide differences within and across countries, and far too many girls are still denied schooling, leave prematurely or complete school with few skills and fewer opportunities. Women and girls also continue to endure unacceptable discrimination and violence, often at the hand of intimate partners or relatives.
