The significance of the internet for China’s reform and opening up cannot be overemphasized. In the first two decades of the 21st century, the internet has gained in popularity in China. And in the past 15 years in particular, it has played a decisive role in the rapid development of the country. Economic development depends on two factors: first, improved efficiency and quality of production and creative design, and second, unimpeded distribution channels that ensure goods produced by factories can reach the market at the fastest rate and at the lowest cost.
The internet has been a driving force behind these two factors in China’s industrial development. In addition, its development has significantly bridged our gap with developed countries in terms of design philosophy and design professionals, by helping us access state-of-the-art design technology and philosophy more quickly.
The internet plays a more visible role in distribution channels, and a telling example is e-commerce. On the internet, ordinary people can express their desire and make critical comments on some of our products in a much easier manner, which better contributes to industrial production and government transformation. The internet also places rural and urban residents on an equal footing in terms of accessing and sharing information, enabling every one to see in real time national progress and rapid urban development. This in turn kindles aspirations for greater development among the general public, and these aspirations can translate into strong driving forces for development.
