上海天文馆建筑面积约3.8万平方米，主建筑以优美的螺旋形态构成“天体运行轨道”，独 具特色的圆洞天窗、球幕影院和倒转穹顶这三个圆形元素构成“三体”结构，共同诠释天体运行的基本规律。

上海天文馆位于临港新片区，占地3.8万平方米。
From above, the museum resembles two connected planetary orbits, with a spherical2 theater sitting on one side and an inverted3 spherical dome4 on the other.
从空中俯瞰，整座建筑就像两个相连的行星轨道，一边是球幕影院，另一边是倒转穹顶。
"The majority of astronomy museums in the world are about 20,000 square meters, so this is arguably the largest in the world. It will be able to host visits by around 6,000 people a day," said Lin Qing, director of the museum's research center.
上海天文馆天文研究中心主任林清称：“全球大多数天文馆都在2万平方米左右，可以说上海天文馆是世界上最大的天文馆，每天能接待6000人左右。”
三大主题展区——“家园”“宇宙”“征程”
上海天文馆主建筑主要由几大展区构成，分别是“家园”“宇宙”“征程”三大主题展区，及“问天”“好奇星球”“航向火星”等特色展区。
The futuristic building will feature three main exhibitions - Home, Universe and Odyssey5 - displaying astronomical6 knowledge, theories about the universe, and the history and current status of human exploration of space.
这座未来感十足的建筑主要包含三大主题展区：“家园”、“宇宙”、“征程”，展示天文知识、宇宙理论以及人类探索太空的历史和现状。
