Jack was ten years old and he was a very lazy boy. He didn’t like doing any work. He had to go to school, of course, but he didn’t study hard there and tried to do little work. His father and mother were both doctors and they hoped that their son would become a doctor, too, when he grew up.
But one day Jack said to his mother, “When I finish school, I want to be a cleaner.”
“A cleaner?” his mother asked. She was very surprised. “That’s not a good job. Why do you want to become a cleaner?”
“Because I would only have to work one day a week,” Jack answered at once.
“Only one day a week?” his mother said. “What do you mean? And how do you know it?”
“Well,” Jack answered, “I know that the cleaners come to work on Thursday every week, because I only see them on that day.” And then his mother laughed and said, “The cleaners go to work on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday in other streets.”

I’ve been a taxi driver for nearly ten years. Most London taxi drivers have their own taxis.
It’s a nice job most of time. You meet a lot of people. I always work at night because there is too much traffic during the day. I live twenty miles outside London and I go to work at 5:30 in the afternoon.
I usually go home between 2:00 and 3:00 in the morning.
Some very strange things happened late at night. The other day I was taking a woman home from a party. She had her little dog with her. When we got to her house, she found that she had lost her key. So I waited in the car with the dog while she climbed in through a window.
I waited and waited. After half an hour of ringing the bell without answering I decided to find out what was going on. I tied the dog to a tree and started to climb in through the window. The next thing I knew was that the police came. They though I was a thief.
Luckily the woman came downstairs. She must have gone to sleep and forgotten about the dog and me!

Last Friday a storm swept through two villages in the New Territories, destroying fourteen homes. Seven others were so badly damaged that their owners had to leave them, and fifteen others had broken windows or broken roofs. One person was killed, several were badly hurt and taken to hospital, and a number of other people received smaller hurt. Altogether over two hundred people were homeless after the storm.
A farmer, Mr Tan, said that the storm began early in the morning and lasted for over and hour. “I was eating with my wife and children,” he said, “when we heard a loud noise. A few minutes later our house fell down on top of us. We tried our best to climb out but then I saw that one of my children was missing. I went back inside and found him, safe but very frightened.”
Mrs Woo Mei Fong said that her husband had just left for work when she felt that her house was moving. She ran outside at once with her children.
“There was no time to take anything.” She said, “A few minutes later, the roof came down.”
