How to study in a more efficient way remains a heatedly debated issue. It is quite commonplace these days for students to learn by rote, which has been widely adopted by schools. However, I believe the demerits of this tendency override the merits. Repetitive studying methods would inevitably restrain students from developing their critical thinking skills. Such process will be associated with remembering vast amount of knowledge and doing similar questions frequently, which leaves no space for deep understanding or free thinking outside of the box. As time goes by, students may be less likely to think actively and may fail to deal with new questions that are beyond the course content. Particularly for subjects such as mathematics which is largely based on logical thinking. This means that the answers for one question could be different if a figure has been changed. Students would be demotivated by role learning. A repeating studying pattern is both time and energy consuming. Learners will find such activity monotonous that may eliminate people’s passion towards education. For example, school boys and girls in some Asian countries, such as China, are required to practice similar questions for hours after finishing schools every day. Consequently, most of them end up showing a discontentment to schools and homework. In some extreme cases, some students choose to leave schools because of exhausted studying. Admittedly, by frequent repetition of the fundamental information learners can have a basic idea as for what the knowledge is and therefore better learn how to put it into practice. Memorization takes place all the time throughout the whole learning process. By being memorized the primary information can be firmly mastered, thus the essence can be learned step by step. And only by keeping the specific information in the mind can one adeptly take advantage of what he or she has learned. For example, lawyers speak on behalf of the defendants in the court. They have to memorize a large amount of laws so that they know how the laws are related to the case function and how they can prove that the defendant is innocent. In conclusion, I believe that studying by rote should be promoted to the minimal extent because it hinders the independent thinking of students and demotivate them to learn actively.(380字)
