　　A: Your car is great. How did you afford such a coolset of wheels?

　　你的车真是太棒了。你怎么买得起这么棒的车呀?

　　B: I worked all summer. It was brutal.

　　英语中一种修饰法——以部分代整体，称为“提喻”。A set of wheels是一套车轮的意思，比喻为“车子”的意思。

　　像这样的用法很多，例如：Two heads are better than one. (三个臭皮匠，顶个诸葛亮。)Great mindthink alike. (英雄所见略同)其中的head和mind均以人体的某部分来代表“人”这个一整体。

　　A: I don’t know why I get a stage fright when Ispeak to a large crowd of people.

　　我不知道为何我对着一群人说话，我就会怯场。

　　B: That’s the case with many people.

　　许多人都是如此。

　　A: And when you are afraid of giving a poor accountof yourself, you will feel even worse.

　　当你害怕给别人留下不好的印象的时候，你会感觉到更糟糕。

　　B: I think that is where the problem lies.

　　我认为那真是问题所在。

　　stage fright是名词短语，其意思为“怯场”。它经常与动词get连用，即为： get a stage fright。

　　A: Please try to stop Tom’s talking. He’s been talkingwith me for a long time, and nobody can get a wordin edgewise.

　　你去让汤姆别说了。他已经说了很长时间了，别人都插不上话。

　　B: What is he talking about?

　　他在说什么?

　　A: His vacation in Africa. It’s very boring.

　　在非洲的假日，很无聊。

　　B : OK. I know how to stop him.

　　Get a word in edgewise是指“有机会插话，在别人不停谈论的时候插话”。此语也可以用作get aedgeways。
