　　The story of Washing Gauze is a play of the Kunqu Opera created according to the legend in the Ming Dynasty—Annals of Wu and Yue. As a native of Kunshan, Jiangsu Province, the author, Liang Chenyu (about 1521-1594), expressed his deep reflection on the rise and fall of the feudalist states via the stories on the two states,Wu and Yue, which seek hegemony in the Spring and Autumn Period. The play became all the rage thanks to its elegant melody, tidy temperament, and magnificent rhetoric.
