　　鉴真(688-763年)是唐朝僧人，广陵江阳(今扬州江阳)人，律宗南山宗传人，也是日本佛教南山律宗的开山祖师，著名医学家。他曾担任扬州大明寺主持时，应日本留学僧请求，五次东渡日本至第六次方成功，并在日本奈良的唐招提寺圆寂。鉴真为中日两国人民的交流作出了巨大贡献，促进了日本佛学、医学、建筑和雕塑水平的提高，日本人民称他为“天平之薨”。

　　Jianzhen (688-763), a monk in the Tang Dynasty and a native of Jiangyang, Guangling (Jiangyang, Yangzhou today), was the successor of the Nanshan Sect of Ritsu, as well as the originator of the Nanshan Ritsu in Japanese Buddhism. And he was also a famous medical scientist. When he served as the chief of the Daming Temple, Yangzhou, he made six attempts to cross the sea to Japan at the request of the Japanese monks who studied in China and succeeded in his sixth attempt. He passed away at Toshodai Temple, Nara, Japan. Jianzhen made significant contributions to the exchanges between the Chinese and Japanese people and promoted the development of Japan’s Buddhism, medicine, archtecture and sculpture. The Japanese people called his death "destruction of balance".
