Imperial Tung Wen College
The Imperial Tung Wen College is the earliest institution established during the "Westernization Movement" in the late Qing Dynasty. The institution served as a window for the Qing Dynasty government to learn about the Western world through translation and publication. Tung Wen College was also designed to train diplomats and translators. The predecessor to the Imperial Tung Wen College was the Russian Institution, which aimed to train Russian translators. It was established in the 22nd year (1757) of Emperor Qianlong’s reign. It was later closed and incorporated into the Imperial Tung Wen College in 1902 because of an incident in 1900.
