　　Liangshan Yi Autonomous Prefecture, shortened as Liangshan prefecture, is the largest area in China with concentrations of the Yi ethnic group. It is situated at the juncture of Sichuan Province and Yunnan Province, specifically in the southwestern region of Sichuan Province. It was once established in October of 1952 as the Liangshan Yi Autonomous Region of Xikang Province. It covers an area of 60,100 square kilometers and is inhabited by more than 10 ethnic groups that include the Han, Yi, Tibetan, and Mongolian ethnic groups. This autonomous prefecture governs 1 city, 15 counties, and one autonomous county. Its government is headquartered in Xichang City, which is well-known for its satellite launch center.
