It is my great pleasure to attend the Conference of Confucius Institutes in Africa The opening show was full of African characteristics, and the performances by the students were full of chinese cultural elements. As we know. Confucius was a great Chinese thinker and educator more than 2,000 years ago. Chinese culture has a history of more than 5,000 years. The four great inventions of ancient China, namely paper-making, the compass, gunpowder and printing, greatly contributed to the progress of human civilization.
Historically, the Silk road linked Asia and Europe, and the fleet led by Zheng He reached as far as Africa. China took to Africa not only silk and chinaware but also the good will of its people. In the past three decades of reform and opening-up, the Chinese culture has become increasingly popular in African countries, becoming a bridge enhancing China-Africa relations.
Last year, over 1.5 million visits to Africa were made by Chinese tourists. Many Chinese TV series are shown in African countries. The number of African students studying in China has been increasing in recent years at a rate of over 30 percent. Quite a number of African singers have appeared on Chinese TV, and we have several African football players playing in China. Chinese and African cultures have become more colorful and enriched through exchanges.
Confucius Institutes are an important platform for exchanges between Chinese and foreign cultures. Named after Confucius these institutes carry distinctive Chinese characteristics and also the good wishes of enhancing cultural exchanges. The African continent has witnessed a rapid increase in the number of Confucius Institutes. In 2005 the first Confucius Institute in Africa was established in Kenya. Currently there are 38 Confucius Institutes and ten Confucius classrooms in 32 African countries.
The Confucius Institute is an educational organization for teaching Chinese in foreign countries; it is also an important platform to showcase China to the world. apart from teaching the Chinese language it also introduces Chinese culture, history, thoughts and customs to the local people. The Confucius Institute follows three principles in teaching the Chinese language, that is it should be useful, interesting and rich in cultural content.
