书上元夜游

己卯上元，予在儋州，有老书生数人来过，曰：“良月嘉夜，先生能一出乎?”予欣然从之。步城西，入僧舍，历小巷，民夷杂揉，屠沽纷然。归舍已三鼓矣。舍中掩关熟睡，已再鼾矣。放杖而笑，孰为得失?过问先生何笑，盖自笑也。然亦笑韩退之钓鱼无得，更欲远去，不知走海者未必得大鱼也。
Nightout on the 15th of the 1st Month

On the night of Lantern Festival of Jimao in Danzhou, several aged scholars came over and said, “What a beautiful moonlit night! Master, how about coming out with us?” I readily agreed. We walked to the west town, visited the monk at his lodgings, passed endless alleys, mixed with diverse ethnic people, butchers and wine sellers, you name it. By the time I got home, the third-watch drum had already sounded. The door was closed. Inside, people were sound asleep and snoring. I put away my staff and laughed. What is gain or loss? Guo looked at me curiously, “Why are you laughing, Father?” “At myself, son.” Nonetheless, I was also laughing at Han Tuizhi, who went fishing and wanted to go further out when he failed of any catch, not knowing that seafarers were not necessarily ensured of big fishes.
