炎黄子孙
Descendants of Yandi and Huangdi
民族把黄帝和炎帝看作自己的祖先。民族的子孙不管迁徙到哪里，都把自己称为炎黄子孙，看作同一血统传下来的。即使到了外国定居，他们的子孙也希望有机会回中国寻根。
The Chinese nation regard Yandi and Huangdi as their ancestors. No matter where they have moved, the Chinese always regard themselves as descendants of Yandi and Huangdi by the same blood relationship. Even after they have settled down abroad, their offsprings hope to have the opportunity to go back to China for their roots.
中国有许多姓氏，为了说明自己是炎黄子孙，他们的族谱往往要追溯到炎黄二帝上头去。比如，中国姓张的人有一亿多，现存的张氏族谱就有轩辕黄帝第五子赐姓张氏的记载。
The Chinese people have numerous surnames; in order to show that they are descendants of Yandi and Huangdi, on their clan pedigree the family line often traces back to Yandi or Huangdi. For instance, there are over 100 million people whose surnames are Zhang, and some existing pedigrees of the Zhang families recorded that the surname of Zhang was granted by the fifth son of Huangdi.
血浓于水，炎黄子孙具有巨大的凝聚力。依靠海内外炎黄子孙的共同努力，大地一定会建设得更加美丽，更加富强。(204 字)
Blood is thicker than water. The descendants of Yandi and Huangdi have tremendous internal cohesion. Through cooperative efforts of the descendants of Yandi and Huangdi inside and outside China, China will surely be built into a more beautiful and more prosperous land.
提示
1.炎黄子孙、民族、中国人民、中国人，在很多情况下所指的对象是一样的，都是the Chinese people，但是这些说法在侧重点、语气、感情色彩等方面还是有所区别的，翻译中如果都译成the Chinese people 或the Chinese nation，就会失去很多东西，特别是上面第二个句子里的“炎黄子孙”要是也译成the Chinese people，话就不通了。
2.“炎帝”的译名是Yandi，“黄帝”可以译成Huangdi 或the Yellow Emperor，由于“轩辕”是他的名字，所以还可译成Xuanyuan Huangdi，但不管译成什么，必须全文译法一致，否则前面是Huangdi，后面是Xuanyuan Huangdi，就好像变成两个人了。
3.“轩辕黄帝第五子赐姓张氏”可以有两种理解，一种是“轩辕黄帝第五子”把“张”这个姓赐给别人，另一种是他被赐姓张。在有条件的情况下，应该查一查有关资料以确定哪一种理解是正确的。下面这个译文取的是第一种理解，但第二种似更为合理。
4.“族谱”如果一时找不到合适的词，可以试一试释意的办法。
说明1.“族谱”还可用genealogy，如果用释意的办法，可以说the historical record of their family tree，或者更为灵活的many Chinese people trace their family trees back to. . . 等。切不可拘泥。曾有学生照搬汉英词典，把它译成不无滑稽的their pedigree of a clan。
2.“现存的……就有……的记载”这是汉语说法，如果硬套这个结构，译成in the existing. . .here is the record that. . .(or: . . .the record of/ about. . .)就太生硬了。
