理性对待克隆人1
21世纪是生物技术革命的世纪。然而，在人类还没有充分享用到生物技术发展的成果的时候，由此引发的克隆人问题已经无法回避。2近年来，一些科学家和组织公开宣布了克隆人的计划。克隆人正从遥远的幻想日益成为逼近的现实。3一些科学家坦言，世界各地都有一些科学家在进行克隆人的试验。4但是应当看到，由于克隆人问题可能带来的复杂后果，世界各国.尤其是生物技术发达的国家，现在大都对此采取明令禁止或者严加限制的态度。5目前，已有23个国家明令禁止生殖性克隆。6一些科学家、医生和法律专家甚至曾要求联合国去向国际法庭寻求咨询意见，宣布克隆人是一项反人类的罪行。7尽管如此，谁也拒绝不了“治疗性克隆”在生产移植器官和攻克疾病等方面的巨大诱惑。8因此，在禁止使用克隆人类胚胎方面，很多国家的态度并不坚决彻底。9还应当看到的第十六单元生物工程Bioengineering是，充分的动物实验可以克服克隆人在技术上的障碍。如果仅仅是禁止克隆人的研究但却不限制克隆动物的研究，从技术上说意义并不大。10克隆技术既可能造福人类，也可以祸害无穷。“技术恐惧”的实质，是对错误运用技术的人的恐惧，而不是对技术本身的恐惧。11人类社会自身的发展也告诉我们，当人类面对伦理道德的危机时，应该理性正视现实。某项科技进步最终是否真正有益于人类，关键在于人类如何对待和应用它。12现在，人们迫切需要做的是，以严肃的科学态度理性直面克隆人，通过讨论达成共识，加快有关克隆人的立法，从一开始就将其纳入严格的管理之中。13各国政府必须在充分考虑可能导致的后果的前提下，决定究竟是否全面禁止治疗性克隆和人体克隆。14如果允许进行治疗性克隆的话，则必须考虑如何加以管理控制。
注释
1.本文的标题是一个动宾词组，如果译成英语的动宾词组Approach Human Cloning with Reason则不太符合英语的表达习惯，不如进行词性转换，译成A Reasonable Approach to Human Cloning。这里的“对待”很容易译成treat，但是它强调的并木是具体的做法，而是看待、处理问题的方式和途径，因此译成approach更合适。
2.本句中，“问题”一词指“议题”，而非“难题”、“困难”，因此不应该译成problem，而应该译成issue。
由此引发：arise there from。
3.“日益成为+名词”可以译成be increasingly + n.结构。
4.“世界各地”很容易译成all over the world，但其实只要思考一下，就会知道，这里的“各地”并非指所有地方，而是指有很多地方，而且分布范围较广，因此可以译成most parts of the world。
5.这个句子较长，可以考虑将长句拆分成几个较短的句子或者分句进行翻译。句中“对此采取……的态度”一语实际上的意思是“对此采取……的做法”，因此翻译的时候不应该出现attitude 一词。而在这一结构中，“做法”是一个表示范畴的词汇，翻译的时候通常省略。
6.“有23个国家”可以用there be句型翻译，但是直接将23 countries放在句首做主语，语气会更加简洁。

8.这里的“谁也拒绝不了”其实是一个模糊的概念，而非一个绝对的否定，译成nobody can reject，从意思上来说没有错，但是更准确的英语表达应该是few can reject。

9.本句中，“方面”是一个表示范畴的词汇，翻译的时候通常省略。
在“各国的态度并不坚决彻底”中，“态度”也是一个范畴词，汉语中的“态度+形容词”结构，在译成英语时往往省略“态度”一词，直接采用系表结构，因此，此处可以译成many countries are not so resolute and thorough。再如：
a) 他的态度非常认真。
译文：He is very earnest.
b) 他今天态度有点异常。
译文：He is not his usual self today.
具体说到做某件事的态度如何，还可以考虑将形容词转译成副词，比如，此处还可以译成many countries do not act (or ban human embryo cloning) so resolutely and thoroughly。
10.翻译本句时，要注意辨别句子的结构。“如果”引导的分句实际上是本句的主语，本句的谓语则是“意义并不大”，而“从技术上说”则是全句的状语。由于主语较长，可以考虑将之译成不定式结构，全句采用it句型进行翻译。
仅仅……但却不：这里可以使用while结构翻译。“不限制”可以译成not restricting，也可以反话正说，译成allowing。
意义并不大：pointless。这里的“意义不大”指“无用的”、“不可能有结果的”，因此译成pointless比meaningless更贴切。
11.技术恐惧：technophobia。
“是……而不是”：这一结构有多种译法，参考译文中采用的是not... but结构;还可以采用not so much... as结构，译成：Technophobia is not so much the fear of technology itself as the fear of the people who use it in a wrong way.
12.关键在于：lie in。此处不必再使用key等单词。
13.此句较长，原文是系表结构，但是主语较长，是一个主谓结构，而表语则是动宾结构，如果译成对应的系表结构，句子可能会很拗口，可以考虑用it句型进行转换，译成It is imperative for us to....
14.本句中的“前提”并非逻辑学中的前提，它强调的是，在做某一件事情前，必须先做另一件事。比较简洁的译法是使用before 一词。

A Reasonable Approach to Human Cloning
The 21st century is a century of biotech revolution. Yet before human beings are able to fully enjoy the fruits of the biotech development, the issue of human cloning arising therefrom is already a problem that no one can evade. In recent years, some scientists and organizations have made public their intentions to clone human beings. Human cloning is increasingly a reality, rather than a distant fantasy.
According to some scientists, there are experiments on human cloning in most parts of the world. However, one must realize that human cloning may bring about complicated consequences. Therefore today, most countries, especially those with advanced biotechnology, explicitly ban or severely restrict human cloning. So far, 23 countries have regulations explicitly banning reproductive cloning. Some scientists, doctors and legal experts have even asked the United Nations to seek an advisory opinion from the World Court declaring human cloning to be a crime against humanity.
Nevertheless, few can reject the tremendous temptation of what therapeutic cloning can do in creating transplants and fighting diseases. Therefore, many countries are not so resolute and thorough in banning human embryo cloning. Besides, sufficient animal experiments may serve to remove the technological obstacles on the way to human cloning. So technologically speaking, it is quite pointless just to ban the research on human cloning while allowing the research on animal cloning.
It is possible for the cloning technology to bring both benefits and infinite disasters to mankind. Technophobia, in its essence, is not the fear of technology itself, but the fear of the people who use it in a wrong way. The history of human society evolution also tells us that in time of ethic crisis man should access reality with reason. Whether a technology accomplishment is ultimately beneficial to mankind lies in how man approaches and uses it. It is imperative for us to deal with the issue of human cloning with reason and from a serious and scientific approach. We should try to get to a common view through consultation and speed up legislation in this regard to put human cloning under strict regulations from the very beginning. The governments must give full consideration to the potential consequences before they decide whether or not to ban both the cloning of humans and therapeutic cloning. And if therapeutic cloning is allowed, they must consider how to regulate it.
