  On October 31st, 2009, Chinese famous scientist Qian Xuesen, died in Beijing when he was 98 years old. He is famous as "the country's father of space technology and king of rocketry".

  Qian was born in 1911 in Hangzhou. He left for the United States after winning a scholarship to graduate school in 1936. He studied at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and later at the California Institute of Technology.

  Qian began his career in the US and was regarded as one of the brightest minds in the new field of aeronautics{航空学) before returning to China in 1955.

  After he returned, Qian set up the first missile and rocket research institute{学院) of China. The institute later helped start Chinese space program. He led the development of China's first nuclear-armed ballistic missile (弹道导弹) and worked on its first satellite.

  He retired in the year before Chinese manned space program was launched in 1992. But his research formed the basis for the Long March CZ -2F rocket that carried astronaut Yang Liwei into orbit in 2003.

  In August, 2009, Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao visited Qian and praised him for devoting his life to Chinese defense technologies. Qian told him, "I'm trying to live to be 100 years old"

  US President Barack Obama visited the Badaling section of the Great Wall in Beijing on Nov. 18th, 2009. The Great Wall was the second sightseeing program for Obama during his visit to China.

  Built originally as the biggest defense work in ancient China, the Great Wall today has become one of the must-see places for visiting foreign leaders to the country in the past sixty years.

  Obama is the fifth US president to visit the Great Wall. Richard Nixon visited the Great Wall in 1972, Ronald Reagan in 1984 and Bill Clinton in 1998,In 2002, former US President George W. Bush and his wife Laura toured the same sections Obama did.

  World Expo 2010 will be held in Shanghai. It will last from May 1st to October 31st, 2010. The Expo site covers a total area of 5.28 km2.It spans(横 跨) both sides of the HuangpuRiver, with 3.93 km2 in Pudong and 135 km2 in Puxi. There are five functional zones marked A, B, C, D and E. Each of them has different functions.

  Zone A will host the national pavilions(国家馆) of Asian countries except southeast Asian ones.

  Zone B will be home to the China Pavilion(中国馆) and Oceania ( 大洋洲的) countries, Pavilions for International Organizations, Theme Pavilions(主题馆), Expo Centre,and Performance Centre etc.

  Zone C will host the national pavilions of European, American and African countries. A large public amusement park will be built at the entrance of this zone.

  Zone D is home to Corporate Pavilions(企业馆), the land is one of the original places of modern China's national industry. So some of the old industrial buildings will be kept and renovated(修复) into Expo pavilions.

  Zone E will host standalone(独立的) Corporate Pavilions, Urban Civilization Pavilion (城市文明馆), and Urban Best Practices Area.
