  (Text 8)

Mark was a farmer who lived in a village far away. One day he became very ill and every body thought he would die. They sent for a doctor in town, who arrived two days later and examined the sick man. The doctor asked for a pen and some paper to write down the name of the medicine. But there was no pen or paper in the village, because no one could read or write.

The doctor picked up a piece of burnt wood from the fire. Using the wood. He wrote the name of the medicine on the door of the house. "Get this medicine for him," he said, "and he will soon get better."

Mark's family and friends did not know what to do. They could not read the strange writing. Then the village baker had an idea. He took off the door of the house, put it on his cart and drove to the nearest town. He bought the medicine, and Mark was soon well again. He would not let anyone wash the magic words from the door. (A) (C) (B)

  (Text 9)

M: You're going to wear out that typewriter.

W: Oh, hi. What are you doing here at this time of night?

M: I should ask you that question. Do you have any idea what time it is?

  W: About ten or ten-thirty?

  M: It's nearly midnight.

W: Really? I didn't have any idea it was so late.

M: Don't you have an early class tomorrow morning?

W: Yes, at seven o'clock. My sparetime class, the students will go to work right after their lesson.

M: Then you ought to go to bed.

  W: OK. (C) (A) (B)

  (Text 10)

M: Did you watch the TV special about barnacles last night?

W: No, I missed it. What did you learn about them?

M: That they glue themselves to rocks in the ocean, shortly after birth. They also stay in the same place forever.

W: Right, have you ever tried removing one of these things? It would be easier to chip the rock away than to get the barnacles off.

M: Exactly, and that's why scientists are trying to figure out what the barnacles glue is made of. It's considered one of the strongest adhesives in nature.

W: And it would have the advantage of being able to work on wet surfaces too.

M: Precisely, and because it's natural protein, it probably wouldn't be harmful to people like so many synthetic glues in use today.

W: Think of all the ways doctors and dentists could use such a glue, mending broken bones, washing false teeth.

M: There could be countless uses. Scientists hope to learn soon exactly how the glue is made, so that people can make use of it. (B) (B) (A) (C) (A)
