　　含义同design①。常与动词不定式连用，也用于haveno~ of doing sth/with the~ of doing sth的结构中。

　　含义较广，可指人或物的意图、目的、用途等。也常用for the ~of，意为“为了……(目的)”。

　　The purpose of the book is to provide a guideto the university.本书旨在介绍这所大学。

　　“(事物中的)要素”，强调该部分不可或缺

　　指对自己的行为的解释、辩解，可以是真实的或杜撰的理由、借口

　　Late again! What's your excuse this time?又迟到了，你这次有什么借口?

　　pretext

　　指为了掩盖真实原因而为自己(尤其不好的)行为找的托词、借口

　　This incident was used as a pretext for intervention in the area.这次事件成了干涉那个地区的借口。
